Green Gram Khichdi

You will need these ingredients:

Rice - 2/3 cup
Green gram - 1/3 cup
Coconut milk - 1 cup
Water - 2 cups
Ginger paste - 1/2 tsp
Garlic paste - 1 tsp
Green chilies - 5
Curry leaves - 1 sprig
Mustard - 1/2 tsp
Butter - 1 tbsp
Salt - to taste

Method:

1. Wash green gram and soak it in hot water for about an hour.
2. Wash the rice and soak it in water to for half hour.
3. Melt the butter in a pressure cooker.
4. Add the mustard and let it crackle.
5. Lower the flame and add the green chilies and curry leaves.
6. Saute for a bit and then add the ginger and garlic paste.
7. Saute until the raw smell is gone.
8. Add the rice and the green gram and mix well.
9. Add in the coconut milk and the water and mix it all together.
10. Add the salt and pressure cook for about 5 to 6 whistles or until the rice and gram are tender.

Note: The amount of water to be added depends on the type of rice you are using. The variety of rice I use requires 3 cups of water.
